Classes in Western Herbalism
Organ Systems, Physiology, Energetics
Beginning Wednesday, January 26th, 2011
The underlying principles of Western Herbalism, as they come down to use from Greek/Arabic and nineteenth century botanical medicine, form a comprehensive, energetic approach also compatible with scientific medicine. This class is most suitable to people who have a good foundation in the use of herbal medicines, but desire to increase their understanding of simple, functional physiology, of a workable system of energetics implicit in Western Herbalism, and use an intuitive approach to herbalism.
We will learn to interpret the energetics of disease (using the six tissue state model of nineteenth century physiomedicalism). We will also understand how this paradigm perpetuates the Greek model of the four qualities (hot, cold, damp, dry) and the two tissue states (tense and relaxed). We will learn about functional physiology, i.e., how the organs, systems, and tissues work, and how they become energetically disordered, i.e., too hot or excited, cold or depressed. The aim is to learn to grasp the functional physiology of disease and match herbs holistically and intuitively.
Other subjects include Southern Blood medicine, the three constitutional types (vata, pitta, kaptha), their relationship to the organ systems (ectoderm, mesoderm, endoderm), and to derivative constitutional types. This introduces us to the 'Animal Medicine' method of classification, modeled on a Native American approach (taught next summer).
