Classes in Western Herbalism

Organ Systems, Physiology, Energetics

Beginning Wednesday, January 26th, 2011

The underlying principles of Western Herbalism, as they come down to use from Greek/Arabic and nineteenth century botanical medicine, form a comprehensive, energetic approach also compatible with scientific medicine. This class is most suitable to people who have a good foundation in the use of herbal medicines, but desire to increase their understanding of simple, functional physiology, of a workable system of energetics implicit in Western Herbalism, and use an intuitive approach to herbalism.

We will learn to interpret the energetics of disease (using the six tissue state model of nineteenth century physiomedicalism). We will also understand how this paradigm perpetuates the Greek model of the four qualities (hot, cold, damp, dry) and the two tissue states (tense and relaxed). We will learn about functional physiology, i.e., how the organs, systems, and tissues work, and how they become energetically disordered, i.e., too hot or excited, cold or depressed. The aim is to learn to grasp the functional physiology of disease and match herbs holistically and intuitively.

Other subjects include Southern Blood medicine, the three constitutional types (vata, pitta, kaptha), their relationship to the organ systems (ectoderm, mesoderm, endoderm), and to derivative constitutional types. This introduces us to the 'Animal Medicine' method of classification, modeled on a Native American approach (taught next summer).

Here is what participant Swanie Simon has to say:
The Herbal Intensive course in Peyrissaguet, France, taught by Julia Graves and Matthew Wood, was an incredible course in every way. Breathtaking nature with many wild herbs provided a beautiful outdoor classroom and the newly renovated farmhouse made for a cozy and rustical indoor classroom. The word intensive is a bit of an understatement for describing this course, we covered an astounding amount of material in the 10 days we were there. In spite of the overwhelming amount of information, it was a fascinating course from beginning to end. Click here to read more...

Here is what participant Kelsey Barrett has to say:
Peyrissaguet lent a landscape of expansive natural wonder, an ideal herbal immersion. The late Summer foliage was a resource for our daily lessons, perfectly balancing the wide breadth of intellectual material exchanged. Click here to read more...

"By magically changing our lives, our green friends restore physical health, psychological happiness, and spiritual purpose. A little miracle occurs and the magical level clicks in, in fact, whenever an herb cures in a real and radical way. This is a sign that something great and new has come in from a different world to enrich and develop our lives to their fullest and most beautiful potential."
